Tracking apps, the escape hatch from data lock-in

You know you should stop using platforms that exploit your data. You want to. But you cannot, because all your history is locked inside them. Ten years of Spotify playlists. Five hundred books logged on Goodreads. A decade of watched films on Netflix. These are not just lists. They are a record of your tastes, your memories, your identity as a consumer of culture. Leaving the platform means losing all of that. And so you stay.

Open protocols alone cannot solve this problem. PeerTube exists, but it has no content. The Fediverse is growing, but it cannot replicate the network effects of YouTube or Spotify. A technical standard is a conduit. It cannot fill itself. The data problem — your history locked inside someone else’s database — requires a different approach.

That approach is a parallel tracking layer. You do not leave the platform today. You do not even reduce your usage. You simply start recording everything you consume into an independent service that runs silently in the background, alongside the platforms you are still using. Over time, this independent record becomes your real history. The platform’s copy becomes secondary. When the moment comes to switch to a different service or a self-hosted alternative, your history moves with you. The anchor loses its weight.

The mechanism is simple. You install a small piece of software that watches what you play, read, or watch across every app and device you use, and it logs everything to a single profile that you control. It does not host content. It does not compete with streaming platforms. It simply observes and remembers, sitting one layer above the content itself. Because it sits above, it outlasts any individual content provider. When you switch from Spotify to Apple Music, or from Netflix to Jellyfin, your history does not reset. The tracker has been recording everything the whole time, indifferent to which platform served the content. The platform becomes interchangeable. The tracking layer is the constant.

The model was pioneered by Last.fm in 2002 with the concept of scrobbling — automatically recording every song you hear from any source into a single unified profile. You connect your Spotify account, your YouTube Music app, your desktop player, and your phone’s local library. Everything flows into one timeline. After a year, you have a complete listening history that belongs to you, not to Spotify. The critical question is what happens to your data after it is recorded. Last.fm is a proprietary platform — it could shut down or be acquired. ListenBrainz, run by the non-profit MetaBrainz Foundation alongside the open music metadata database MusicBrainz, takes the open approach: your listening data is published under a public domain licence, entering the commons where anyone can build on it and no single company controls it. When you scrobble to ListenBrainz, you are contributing to infrastructure your future self can use with whatever tools exist at that time.

The same pattern works for books and film, with varying degrees of maturity. Goodreads, owned by Amazon since 2013, holds your shelves, ratings, and reading history. It does allow export — every book, rating, and shelf as a CSV file. That data can go into The StoryGraph, an independent alternative with better analytics and no Amazon affiliation, or into BookWyrm, a federated ActivityPub-native service where your reviews propagate across instances rather than sitting in a single database. For film and television, Trakt is the dominant tracker. It integrates with Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, Infuse, and even Netflix through browser extensions. You watch something, Trakt records it. If you switch from Plex to Jellyfin, your watch history does not reset — Trakt has been tracking everything the whole time. SIMKL offers a similar service with a stronger focus on anime and Asian content, and running both in parallel provides redundancy. Unlike music and books, film tracking has no open, non-profit equivalent yet. Trakt and SIMKL are commercial companies. The gradient of maturity — music has ListenBrainz, books have BookWyrm, film has neither — shows that data portability improves when users demand export and support open alternatives.

The strategy works because it does not ask you to change your behaviour. You do not need to quit Spotify. You do not need to delete your Netflix account. You do not need to convince your friends to join a new platform. You add a thin layer of recording on top of what you already do, and you let time do the rest. After a year, your tracker profile contains a complete record of your habits across every service and device. After two years, that record is more valuable than anything held by any single platform, because it spans sources the platform has never seen. After five years, losing your Spotify history becomes irrelevant — you have already built a better one elsewhere. The platform’s lock-in does not dissolve because you fought it. It dissolves because you made it redundant.

This is not a call to abandon commercial platforms. It is a call to build your own history in parallel while you wait for the right moment to leave. Every song you scrobble to Last.fm or ListenBrainz, every book you shelve on StoryGraph or BookWyrm, every film you mark as watched on Trakt is a brick in a wall protecting you from lock-in. Platforms can change their terms, raise their prices, remove content, or ban accounts. Your history survives because it was never truly theirs. You cannot rebuild the internet overnight. But you can start building your own archive of everything that matters to you, one scrobble at a time. That archive is your exit strategy, and when the moment comes, you will be glad it exists.
